Photovoices International (PVI) is an Indonesian non-profit organization that supports marginalized and underrepresented communities to take action to improve their lives through a facilitated learning process using photography to tell their stories and advocate for their cause. Our work is based on the principles of social justice including equity, access, inclusion, diversity, participation and rights. We implement participatory methodologies that are critical to understanding and addressing issues important to the communities we work with.

PVI focuses on:

• Promoting sustainable natural resource management and nature-based solutions to climate change

• Amplifying the voices of indigenous people and local communities

• Raising awareness of gender issues

• Uplifting the voices of women and young people

Purpose of the Position:

The Community Facilitator is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the implementation of PVI’s programs at the village, city and regional levels. The role of the facilitator is to lead community participants in a process that includes:

  • participatory issue-mapping;
  • training on photography, communications and participatory research methods;
  • documenting social and environmental concerns, local histories, personal experiences, and cultural perspectives, all of which are vital in understanding local context in unique settings;
  • developing stories based on interviews with impacted community members and leaders; and,
  • presenting photo-stories to peers, community and decision-makers.

Responsibilities

Leads community participants in a facilitated learning process that includes training on photography, communication and participatory research.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong facilitation and community organizing skills
  • Experience in participatory methodologies.
  • Strong knowledge of gender, human rights, natural resource management, and community development issues.
  • Ability and willingness to live and work in a village settings for 6-8 months, to travel, work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays and evenings, and to work under stress during peak workload periods.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity, flexible world view, emotional maturity and physical stamina.
  • Thorough knowledge of MS office.
  • Passion for photography is a plus.
  • Fluency in English is preferable.

Position Location:

While this position is based in the PVI office located in Sanur, Bali, the Community Facilitator will spend most of their time in the field, living and working in the community for the duration of each project (approximately 6-8 months). Project sites are often in small and remote villages located throughout the Indonesian Archipelago.
