Position Title: Head of Research & Development (R&D)

Role Overview

The Head of R&D is responsible for overseeing the research, development, and innovation processes in the production of malleable iron pipe fittings. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership abilities, and a focus on developing new technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes that enhance the company's product offerings. The successful candidate will drive product quality, sustainability, and cost-efficiency while ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Strategy:

- Develop and implement the R&D strategy in alignment with the company’s goals.

- Lead, mentor, and manage the R&D team to ensure productivity and innovative output.

- Work closely with senior management to identify research priorities and areas for innovation.

2. Product & Process Development:

- Spearhead the development of new malleable product designs, improving performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness.

- Lead research into advanced materials and processes that enhance the strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance of malleable iron products.

- Optimize foundry processes, including casting, heat treatment, and finishing, to increase efficiency and reduce scrap rates.

3. Quality Assurance & Testing:

- Collaborate with the quality control department to ensure that all new products meet industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO) and customer specifications.

- Design and oversee testing protocols for product reliability, tensile strength, and material properties of malleable iron fittings.

- Implement feedback loops from production to improve designs and processes.

4. Sustainability & Compliance:

- Drive initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of the foundry processes, including waste reduction, recycling, and energy efficiency.

- Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.

- Stay informed about global trends in manufacturing and material science related to malleable iron and foundry operations.

5. Collaboration & Innovation:

- Collaborate with the production, sales, and marketing departments to align product development with customer needs and market demand.

- Engage with external research institutions, universities, and industry partners to stay ahead of technological advancements and introduce innovative solutions.

- Participate in industry conferences, workshops, and seminars to maintain and build a network of contacts.

6. Budgeting & Reporting:

- Develop and manage the R&D budget, ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget.

- Provide regular updates to senior management on the progress of R&D initiatives and their commercial impact.

- Prepare detailed reports and documentation for product launches, new patents, and technical evaluations.

Qualifications

1. Education:

- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (essential).

- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Material Science, or Engineering (preferred).

- Additional certifications in foundry operations, metallurgy, or R&D management are a plus.

2. Experience:

- At least 8 years of experience in R&D roles, with 5+ years in a leadership capacity within a foundry or manufacturing environment.

- Proven track record of leading successful product development initiatives, particularly in malleable iron, ductile iron, or other ferrous casting industries.

- Hands-on experience in foundry processes such as casting, molding, heat treatment, and finishing for iron or steel products.

- Knowledge of the production and application of pipe fittings or similar products.

3. Technical Skills:

- Deep understanding of the material properties of malleable iron, including mechanical performance, metallurgical structures, and heat treatment processes.

- Familiarity with industry standards for iron products (e.g., ASTM, BS, ISO) and relevant testing methods.

- Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and other relevant software for product design and process simulation.

4. Soft Skills:

- Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide cross-functional teams.

- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, particularly in materials research and process optimization.

- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective reporting and cross-departmental collaboration.

- Ability to adapt to changing market conditions and technological advancements.
