The role focuses on building robust scientific understanding to guide responsible land management. The successful candidate will advance tropical forest and peatland science with main focus on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Monitoring and Reporting. Key activities include: Conducting eddy covariance flux measurements; Instrument maintenance, calibration, and data management; Assessing carbon fluxes via remote sensing; Calculating carbon footprints. Additionally, the role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in Weather Science: Enhancing meteorological monitoring, providing forecasts, and tracking climate trends; Hydrology: Investigating groundwater levels, plantation growth relationships, and implementing Water Management Best Practices; Conservation and Restoration: Advancing science to deliver applied solutions for conserving, rebuilding, and enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of technical staff that will manage and maintain research trials;
  • Proactively plan, organize and perform assigned projects and tasks to meet applicable deadlines; monitor progress against action plans and/or objectives for their area;
  • Review, understand and communicate management improvement required to improve production and minimize impacts on the environment.
  • Train, coach, and mentor team members.
  • Represent the company in workshops, conferences, and committees.
  • Regularly report progress to senior management and relevant units.
  • Motivate and support team members, assign tasks, and ensure fair delegation.
  • Build capacity in peatland and GHG research.
  • Manage and lead technical teams in monitoring and data analysis.
  • Engage with national and international scientists and stakeholders.
  • Manage large datasets, ensure QA/QC of data, and lead annual reviews.
  • Compile GHG data and complete emission reports.
  • Stay updated on technical advancements and apply new knowledge.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Develop MRV capacity in climate change.
  • Manage databases supporting carbon footprint reporting.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders for effective collaboration.

Desired Educational Requirements and Work Experience:

A PhD with experience using the Eddy Covariance technique and a proven science background in monitoring and reporting land-sector greenhouse gas emissions, demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications in international journals, is required. Ideally, the candidate will have applied experience in the forestry or agriculture sector. Previous experience working with tropical forest and peatland is a considerable advantage.

The candidate should also demonstrate experience in the following areas:

  • Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience in designing and implementing GHG monitoring programs in forestry, agriculture, or related environmental sectors.
  • Experience managing and working with Eddy Covariance monitoring systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of forestry and land-sector GHG monitoring, accounting, reporting, and IPCC guidelines.
  • Strong analytical skills, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized, with the ability to prioritize multiple competing tasks under strict deadlines.
  • Good understanding of environmental physics, hydrology, micro-meteorology, general ecology, or plant physiology.
  • Good understanding of remote sensing, satellite image processing, and spatial/geo-statistical data analysis.
  • Skilled in statistical packages, machine learning/deep learning algorithms, and scientific programming (e.g., R, Python).
  • Effective in working autonomously or as part of a team, with minimal supervision when required.
  • Excellent spoken and written English communication skills.
  • Willingness to relocate to Riau, Indonesia, and work within a multi-cultural, multidisciplinary team.
