Some of your duties will include:
Responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety and process engineering programs. This role requires extensive technical knowledge of metallurgical and chemical processes, safety compliance, and risk mitigation strategies to ensure safe, efficient, and optimized operations. The position collaborates with cross-functional teams, including production, maintenance, and environmental engineering, to drive continuous improvement in safety and process efficiencies while aligning with corporate and regulatory standards.
Safety and Compliance Management: Develop, implement, and monitor safety management systems and protocols to ensure the smelting unit meets regulatory and company safety standards; Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations. Identify root causes and recommend corrective actions; Oversee the implementation of control measures to mitigate workplace hazards, including but not limited to fire, toxic fumes, equipment operation, and electrical hazards; Facilitate safety training programs to ensure compliance and elevate safety awareness among employees.
Process Optimization and Engineering: Design, implement, and manage processes to enhance production efficiency, reduce waste, and maintain the quality of output in the smelting process; Analyze metallurgical and chemical data, production yields, and energy consumption to identify areas for process improvement and cost reduction; Collaborate with engineering and operational teams to troubleshoot and optimize existing processes, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum operational efficiency; Environmental and Sustainability Compliance; Ensure that all smelting operations comply with environmental regulations and standards, particularly concerning emissions, waste disposal, and water use; Work closely with the Environmental Department to develop and implement processes that reduce the environmental footprint and support sustainability initiatives.
Team Leadership and Development: Lead, mentor, and develop the Safety and Process Engineering teams, setting clear objectives and providing guidance on best practices; Foster a safety-first culture and encourage open communication, proactive problem-solving, and accountability within the team; Drive a continuous improvement mindset, leveraging new technologies and innovations to enhance the safety and efficiency of the smelting process.
Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and present regular reports to senior management, outlining key metrics, incident reports, risk assessments, and process improvements; Maintain up-to-date documentation on safety protocols, incident investigations, and process engineering changes.
What skills and experience do you need?
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field. Advanced certifications in Safety Management, Process Safety, or Occupational Health & Safety (e.g., CSP, NEBOSH) are preferred;
- At least 12-15 years of relevant experience in safety and process engineering roles, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior advisory or managerial position.
- Proven experience in Mineral Processing/ Smelting/ Petrochemical/ Chemical operations, preferably within the copper or gold mining industry.
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations and standards specific to mining and smelting (e.g., OSHA, MSHA, and relevant environmental standards).
- Hands – on knowledge of Mineral Processing/ Smelting/ Petrochemical/ Chemical operations, Equipment and the associated risks: has a deep understanding of how operation processes work and the inherent risks (thermal, chemical, and physical).
- Understanding of Hazardous Materials and Waste Management: Experience in dealing with hazardous materials like lead, arsenic, sulfur dioxide, and their safe disposal.
- Proficiency in process engineering software and safety analysis tools.
- Experience with incident investigation methodologies (e.g., Root Cause Analysis, HAZOP).
- Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation: Ability to conduct hazard analyses, risk assessments, and thorough investigations of incidents or accidents.
- Compliance and Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with local, national, and international safety regulations relevant to the industry, such as EPA, OSHA, MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration), and environmental regulations. Have strong knowledge of Accident Incident Investigation Method, Work Permit Management System,
- Demonstrate, Act decisively and Lead HSE skill in Mineral Processing/ Smelting/ Petrochemical/ Chemical plant, safety engineering, safety project management, human resource management, training or training development with program implementation; Has Emergency Response Team Experience.
- The candidate should possess HSE System Trainings (Investigation, Risk Assessment or other HSE Trainings supported the system);
- Strong leadership and organizational, scheduling & time management skills; Ability to work both independently and as a team player and thrive in a fast paced, high pressure environment; Ability to communicate well, and work productively with internal and external individuals; A commitment to safety and a desire to maintain our Indonesian mining operations to world class international safety standards; Demonstrate strong conceptual skills, and capable of developing lateral and practical solutions; High level of integrity and commitment; Good analytical; conflict resolution; sound decision making skills; innovative.
- Excellent communication skills in English both verbal and written and computer literate.
